Oedipus Cursing His Son Polynices
To scale 30 x 28 in on the wall
Representative Hand-applied gesso embellishment
About the Artwork
Painted during Fuseli's mature period in London, this work exemplifies his fascination with the darker corners of classical literature and the supernatural forces that drive human destiny. The Swiss-born artist had established himself as the master of literary Romanticism by 1786, drawing inspiration from his deep knowledge of Greek tragedy and his friendship with William Blake. This canvas emerged from Fuseli's belief that art should disturb rather than comfort, representing his theory that the sublime emerges from terror and the unknown. The painting's reception among London's intellectual circles cemented Fuseli's reputation as the painter of dreams and nightmares, influencing a generation of Romantic artists who sought to visualize the psychological depths of human experience.
