Painted during Inness's second Italian sojourn, Twilight In Italy represents the artist's profound engagement with European Barbizon principles while maintaining his distinctly American sensibility toward the sublime in nature. This 1870 work emerged during a pivotal moment when Inness, influenced by the mystical writings of Emanuel Swedenborg, began integrating spiritual philosophy with his artistic practice; the result was a softer, more introspective approach to landscape that prioritized mood over topographical accuracy.
