About the Artwork
Created during the final decade of Inness's career, this painting reflects his deepening interest in Swedenborgian philosophy and his belief that landscape painting should express spiritual rather than merely physical truths. By the 1890s, Inness had established himself as America's foremost landscape painter, having absorbed influences from the Barbizon School during his European sojourns while developing a uniquely American voice. This work exemplifies what critics called his "civilized wilderness" – pastoral scenes that suggested both the beauty of untamed nature and humanity's harmonious presence within it. The painting's golden tonalities and soft atmospheric effects demonstrate Inness's mastery of what he termed "the subjective mystery of nature," positioning him as a bridge between 19th-century Romanticism and emerging Tonalist sensibilities.
