About the Artwork
This work represents Inness during his most philosophically developed phase, when he sought to paint not mere landscape but what he called 'the reality of the unseen.' Created just two years before his death, the painting emerged from his winter residence in Tarpon Springs, where he was drawn by both the unique quality of Florida light and his belief that warm climates enhanced spiritual perception. The settlement, established by Greek sponge divers, provided Inness with an exotic yet accessible subject that allowed him to continue his investigation into how landscape could express divine presence. This particular canvas demonstrates his movement away from the detailed naturalism of his Hudson River School origins toward a more subjective, emotionally resonant approach that would influence American landscape painting well into the twentieth century.
