About the Artwork
Created during Inness's second Italian sojourn in the early 1870s, this painting reflects the artist's deepening engagement with the philosophical teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose mystical Christianity influenced Inness to seek spiritual correspondence between the visible and invisible worlds. The Barbizon influence remains evident in his loose brushwork and tonal harmonies, yet Inness was moving beyond French naturalism toward his own distinctly American interpretation of landscape painting; the Alban Hills had attracted artists for centuries, but Inness brought to this storied terrain his unique vision of nature as a vessel for transcendent meaning. This work was painted during a period when Inness was gaining recognition among American collectors who appreciated his departure from the meticulous detail of the Hudson River School in favor of more evocative, spiritually resonant interpretations of landscape.
