Twilight in the Wilderness

Church completed this work in 1860, at the absolute peak of his public reputation, following his celebrated expeditions to South America and the international sensation of Heart of the Andes (1859). Where that canvas proclaimed the fecundity of tropical nature, Twilight in the Wilderness turned inward to the American north, almost certainly depicting the Adirondack or Maine wilderness Church had explored repeatedly. The painting was exhibited in New York to enormous acclaim and was quickly read by contemporaries as something more than a landscape: on the eve of the Civil War, its solitary, uninhabited expanse and the near-apocalyptic intensity of its sky carried an unmistakable elegiac charge. Scholars have long connected it to the anxieties of 1860, a republic on the verge of fracture contemplating its own wilderness as both refuge and elegy. Church belonged to the second generation of the Hudson River School, and this canvas represents the movement at its most ambitious, fusing the topographic fidelity of Thomas Cole's tradition with a luminist concern for atmospheric light that elevates the sky itself into the primary subject. The work is held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it has remained one of the most studied American landscapes of the 19th century.
