Flowers in Jamaica, West Indies

Church made several journeys to Jamaica, the most productive in 1865, travelling in part to recover his health and in part to pursue the tropical subjects that had consumed him since his first South American expeditions of the 1850s. His great canvases of the Andes and the Colombian rainforest had established his reputation as the defining painter of the Hudson River School, and Jamaica offered the same lush equatorial world at shorter distance. Studies like Flowers in Jamaica, West Indies were working documents: rapid plein-air records of specific plants, colours and light conditions that would later inform his large compositions. In that role they reveal something his finished paintings deliberately conceal, namely the speed and confidence of his eye. Church was deeply influenced by Alexander von Humboldt's writings on the unity of nature, and that philosophy is visible here: the painting makes no hierarchy among species, presenting a horizontal democracy of growth in which every plant presses equally toward the light. Such botanical field studies place Church in a distinguished lineage alongside Merian and Humboldt's own illustrators, though Church was always primarily a painter rather than a naturalist, and the emotional charge of this study exceeds any scientific purpose.
