Church made several journeys to Jamaica, the most productive in 1865, travelling in part to recover his health and in part to pursue the tropical subjects that had consumed him since his first South American expeditions of the 1850s. His great canvases of the Andes and the Colombian rainforest had established his reputation as the defining painter of the Hudson River School, and Jamaica offered the same lush equatorial world at shorter distance.
