About the Artwork
Painted during the height of De Morgan's mature period, this work exemplifies her unique position within the Pre-Raphaelite movement as she explored themes of death not as horror but as spiritual transformation. Created in 1890, when De Morgan had fully developed her distinctive synthesis of classical mythology with Symbolist philosophy, the painting reflects her deep engagement with spiritualist beliefs and her conviction that death represented passage rather than ending. Unlike her male Pre-Raphaelite contemporaries who often depicted death through medieval or literary allegory, De Morgan approached the subject through her personal lens of Neoplatonic philosophy, presenting the Angel of Death as comforter rather than destroyer, embodying her belief in the soul's eternal journey.
