Artwork Description

The Angel of Death by Evelyn De Morgan, 1890

Framed Canvas Art

Against a backdrop of Italian cypress trees and distant architecture, De Morgan presents a profound meditation on mortality through The Angel of Death, where a winged figure in flowing brown robes gently embraces a kneeling woman draped in crimson and deep blue. The composition centers on this tender exchange, with warm golden light suffusing the scene from the left while creating dramatic shadows that model the angel's powerful wings and the supplicant's clasped hands. De Morgan's meticulous attention to botanical detail manifests in the foreground wildflowers and the precisely rendered foliage, while her masterful handling of fabric creates a sense of movement as the angel's robes seem to billow with divine presence.

Read full artwork description

Painted during the height of De Morgan's mature period, this work exemplifies her unique position within the Pre-Raphaelite movement as she explored themes of death not as horror but as spiritual transformation. Created in 1890, when De Morgan had fully developed her distinctive synthesis of classical mythology with Symbolist philosophy, the painting reflects her deep engagement with spiritualist beliefs and her conviction that death represented passage rather than ending. Unlike her male Pre-Raphaelite contemporaries who often depicted death through medieval or literary allegory, De Morgan approached the subject through her personal lens of Neoplatonic philosophy, presenting the Angel of Death as comforter rather than destroyer, embodying her belief in the soul's eternal journey.

Our archival giclee reproduction captures the subtle modeling that defines the angel's wings, from the rich umber shadows between the feathers to the warm highlights that suggest divine luminescence. The museum-grade cotton canvas preserves De Morgan's distinctive layering technique, particularly visible in the woman's crimson drapery where transparent glazes create depth and luminosity that poster prints flatten into uniform color blocks. Digital restoration from high-resolution museum scans has recovered the delicate gradations in the background sky, from pale azure to cream, and the intricate details of the cypress grove that mass-produced reproductions lose entirely. The ornate composite frame, with its warm golden finish, complements the painting's earth-toned palette while echoing the sacred geometry implicit in De Morgan's carefully balanced composition.
