Artwork Description

A Soul in Hell by Evelyn De Morgan, 1892

Framed Canvas Art

In "A Soul in Hell," De Morgan presents a contemplative figure draped in sumptuous golden-orange robes, seated upon an elaborate stone bench amid a paradoxical garden setting. The painting's warm amber and burnt sienna palette dominates the composition, while delicate pink roses and purple irises create unexpected notes of beauty against the metaphysical subject matter. The figure's pose—hand supporting the head in classical melancholy—establishes the focal point, while serpentine tree branches frame the scene above, creating a sense of enclosure. De Morgan's technique here demonstrates her mastery of the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, with meticulous attention to botanical details and rich, jewel-toned colors that seem to glow from within the canvas.

Read full artwork description

Painted in 1892 during the height of De Morgan's artistic maturity, this work represents her unique interpretation of spiritual and metaphysical themes that distinguished her from her male Pre-Raphaelite contemporaries. While the title suggests torment, the painting's visual language speaks more to contemplation and introspection; De Morgan often explored the complexities of the soul's journey through symbolic imagery rather than literal depiction. This piece reflects the artist's deep interest in spiritualism and theosophy, movements that gained considerable following in late Victorian society. The work demonstrates De Morgan's ability to transform potentially dark subject matter into compositions of remarkable beauty, a characteristic that made her one of the most sought-after artists of the Symbolist movement in Britain.

Our archival giclee reproduction captures the subtle gradations between the figure's luminous robes and the shadowed garden recesses, preserving the delicate interplay between the golden highlights on the fabric and the deeper crimson shadows in the folds. The museum-grade cotton canvas faithfully renders De Morgan's characteristic glazing technique, maintaining the translucent quality of the background landscape and the precise botanical details of each rose petal and iris bloom. Our source image, digitally restored from high-resolution museum archives, recovers the full tonal range from the deepest purple shadows beneath the stone bench to the pale sky glimpsed through the canopy above. The ornate composite frame, with its warm gold finish, perfectly complements the painting's rich amber tonalities while providing the classical elegance befitting this masterwork of Victorian Symbolism.
