About the Artwork
Created in 1907 during the final decade of De Morgan's career, this painting represents her mature exploration of pacifist themes that became increasingly urgent as Europe moved toward the Great War. As one of the few successful female artists associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, De Morgan had established herself as a master of allegorical subjects that combined classical mythology with contemporary social concerns. The work reflects her lifelong commitment to spiritualism and her belief in art's capacity to convey moral and philosophical truths; the maternal figure becomes a universal symbol of protection and hope, embodying the artist's vision of feminine divine power as a counterforce to the masculine sphere of warfare and conflict.
