About the Artwork
Created during the height of De Morgan's mature period, this work reflects her deep engagement with Pre-Raphaelite ideals and her unique interpretation of mythological themes. As one of the few successful female painters of the late Victorian era, De Morgan developed this celestial iconography while working alongside her husband, ceramicist William De Morgan, in their Chelsea studio. The painting emerged from her fascination with lunar mythology and the feminine divine, themes she explored repeatedly in works like 'Luna' and 'Night and Sleep.'
