About the Artwork
Painted during the height of De Morgan's mature period, this work represents her bold interpretation of classical mythology through a distinctly feminine lens that challenges traditional power dynamics. While her husband William De Morgan was establishing his reputation in decorative ceramics, Evelyn was creating some of the most psychologically complex mythological paintings of the Victorian era; this piece demonstrates her ability to infuse ancient Greek narratives with contemporary concerns about agency and desire. The painting's exhibition at the New Gallery in 1897 solidified De Morgan's position among the leading Symbolist painters of her generation, with critics praising her ability to render both the sensuality and the terror inherent in mythological transformation scenes.
