Southern Courtship

Painted in 1859, the year Johnson exhibited Negro Life at the South to wide acclaim and controversy in New York, Southern Courtship sits at the center of his sustained examination of African American life in the antebellum period. Johnson had spent time in Washington, D.C., observing the lives of enslaved people in the alley dwellings behind his father's house, and these experiences informed a body of work that was unprecedented in American genre painting for its humanity and specificity. Working within the tradition of American genre realism and strongly influenced by his training in The Hague under Dutch Old Master conventions, Johnson brought a compositional intelligence and tonal discipline to scenes that most of his contemporaries either ignored or caricatured. Southern Courtship refuses sentimentality: the figures are not posed for effect but caught in the middle of a private moment, their dignity intact.
