Hollyhocks

Johnson painted Hollyhocks in 1876, at a moment when his reputation was firmly established and he was moving with increasing confidence between the American Realism of his documentary figure studies and the warmer, more intimate register of his domestic and garden subjects. By the mid-1870s Johnson had long since proved himself with large narrative canvases, and he was drawn in this period to the pleasures of leisure, sunlight, and the social life of prosperous New England summers, particularly on Nantucket, where he maintained strong connections. The garden setting here, with its high brick wall and cultivated abundance, evokes the domestic world of New York's affluent merchant class, the same milieu that sustained his portrait practice and allowed him freedom to pursue more personal subjects. The painting sits at a quiet but telling intersection in American art history: it belongs to a tradition of garden leisure scenes that American painters were developing independently of, and in productive conversation with, the contemporaneous Impressionist garden pictures then emerging in France. Johnson's approach is more grounded and less atmospheric than Monet's, but the shared subject and the shared impulse toward light-filled outdoor settings link the two traditions in instructive ways.
