Cranberry Pickers, Nantucket

Eastman Johnson first visited Nantucket in 1870 and returned repeatedly through the 1870s and into the 1880s, producing a sustained body of work documenting the island's cranberry harvest that stands among the most cohesive series in nineteenth-century American painting. Cranberry Pickers, Nantucket, dated to around 1879, belongs to the mature phase of that series, when Johnson had fully absorbed the compositional problem of placing many figures in an open, featureless landscape without losing either the sense of collective labor or individual human weight. The cranberry harvest on Nantucket drew a mixed workforce of islanders and seasonal laborers, and Johnson approached the subject with the same sociological attentiveness he had earlier brought to Negro Life at the South (1859): labor is portrayed with dignity, without sentimentality, and without the genre-painting condescension that diminished lesser contemporaries. By the late 1870s Johnson was also deeply engaged with plein-air sketching, and the freedom visible in this canvas reflects that practice, the field studies feeding directly into looser, more atmospheric handling than his earlier work. The painting has been held in major American private and institutional collections and is regularly cited as one of the defining images of post-Civil War American rural life, a visual document of a specific place, season, and community made by an artist at the height of his observational powers.
