About the Artwork
Created during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, this work exemplifies Peeters' pioneering role as one of the first professional female painters specializing in ontbijtjes (breakfast pieces). Working in Antwerp around 1615, Peeters developed her distinctive approach to food still lifes during a period when such subjects were gaining prestige among wealthy merchant patrons who appreciated both the technical skill required and the symbolic references to prosperity. Her ability to render materials with scientific precision while maintaining artistic sensitivity established her reputation across Flanders, and this particular composition demonstrates her mastery of the Northern Baroque tradition that would influence still life painting for generations.
