Mount St. Helens, Columbia River, Oregon - Albert Bierstadt, 1875
About the Artwork
Bierstadt made extended sketching expeditions to the Pacific Northwest and California in the 1860s and 1870s, gathering material for the large-scale exhibition canvases that had made his reputation in New York and London. By the mid-1870s he was the preeminent painter of American wilderness spectacle, and the Cascade volcanoes gave him exactly the sublime vertical accent his compositions required. Mount St. Helens, Columbia River, Oregon belongs to a group of Northwest landscapes in which Bierstadt tested the mountain's perfect cone against the horizontal plane of the river valley, a formal contrast that had no equal in the eastern ranges he had painted earlier. The work participates in the broader Hudson River School project of constructing a national identity through landscape: the untouched wilderness, the luminous atmosphere, and the immense scale together argue for the continent as a providential inheritance. Critics of the period sometimes faulted Bierstadt for theatrical excess, but later scholarship has recognized that the drama is inseparable from the argument: these paintings were made to awe congressional patrons and European audiences equally, and they succeeded. The painting has been associated with the Layton Art Collection and with private American holdings, and it remains among the most reproduced of Bierstadt's Northwest subjects.
