Mount Corcoran

Bierstadt painted Mount Corcoran during the mid-1870s, a period in which he was working at the height of his ambition and facing the first serious challenges to his critical standing. He had made multiple expeditions to the American West, and his large-format Sierra paintings were conceived as national statements as much as landscapes. This canvas was named in honor of Washington art patron William Wilson Corcoran, founder of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, a gesture that reflects Bierstadt's calculated navigation of patronage networks in Gilded Age America. The painting entered the Corcoran's collection and remained one of the signature works of that institution. Art historians situate it within the Hudson River School's sustained project of imaging the American wilderness as providential territory, a landscape theology in oil paint. By the late 1870s, the critical tide was turning toward the tonal intimacy of the Barbizon tradition and eventually Impressionism, and Bierstadt's monumental panoramas began to seem, to some critics, overwrought. That reappraisal has long since reversed: the painting is now read as one of the defining achievements of 19th-century American landscape painting.
