Merced River, Yosemite Valley

Bierstadt painted this canvas at the height of his fame, shortly after his first expedition to Yosemite in 1863, a journey that transformed both his career and American landscape painting. Working from field sketches and stereoscopic photographs made on the Carleton Watkins model, he constructed monumental studio compositions that collapsed the documentary and the sublime into a single image. The result belongs firmly to the Hudson River School, that tradition of American wilderness painting in which light itself becomes the true subject and the land a theater for its performance. Bierstadt's Yosemite pictures arrived in the East at a moment when the valley was being debated as a candidate for federal protection; his canvases, sold to industrial patrons and shown in grand touring exhibitions, functioned as both aesthetic objects and arguments for conservation. Merced River, Yosemite Valley entered the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where it has remained a centerpiece of American landscape holdings, its scale and ambition reflecting the confidence of a painter who understood himself to be recording a national inheritance.
