Kalela in Autumn
About the Artwork
Gallen-Kallela designed and built Kalela in 1895 as both home and studio, and the compound became one of the defining creative retreats of Finnish cultural life. By 1915 he had returned from years abroad and a period of intensive work on the Kalevala mural frescoes for the Paris World Exhibition; the Kalela paintings of this period mark an intimate counterpoint to that monumental ambition, the artist turning from national epic to private woodland. The handling in this work belongs squarely to Post-Impressionism: the palette pushes beyond what the autumnal eye registers toward colours chosen for their emotional resonance, and the constructed, directional brushwork owes as much to Cézanne's logic as it does to plein-air spontaneity. Gallen-Kallela dated the canvas precisely, inscribing "9.X.1915" in the lower right, a signature habit that gives the Kalela autumn studies an almost diary-like intimacy within his larger oeuvre.
