Gallen-Kallela painted this work during the intensely productive period of the late 1890s, when he had retreated from Helsinki to his studio at Kalela on the shores of Lake Ruovesi, immersing himself in the Finnish wilderness that would fuel both his Kalevala cycle and his landscape practice.
