Gallen-Kallela painted this work during the intensely productive period of the late 1890s, when he had retreated from Helsinki to his studio at Kalela on the shores of Lake Ruovesi, immersing himself in the Finnish wilderness that would fuel both his Kalevala cycle and his landscape practice. The late 1890s were a pivotal moment: Finland was under increasing pressure from Russification policies, and for Gallen-Kallela, as for many Finnish artists and writers of the period, the northern forest carried a weight of national identity that went far beyond scenic interest. The taiga was not merely scenery; it was the living ground of Finnish myth and cultural memory.
