Claude Monet

No painter pursued a single obsession with more discipline or more radical results than Claude Monet; across six decades he returned again and again to the same subjects (haystacks, cathedral facades, water gardens, river fog) not to paint them but to paint the light falling on them at a specific moment, in a specific season, under specific atmospheric conditions. The result was a body of work that permanently changed what painting could do, culminating in the Water Lilies series at Giverny, which prefigured Abstract Expressionism by half a century.
