About the Artwork
Painted during the final years of World War I, this work belongs to Monet's revolutionary series of large-scale water lily canvases that would culminate in his monumental Grandes Décorations donated to the French state. At seventy-nine and struggling with cataracts, Monet had retreated deeper into his Giverny sanctuary, developing an increasingly abstract visual language that anticipated mid-century Abstract Expressionism. This particular canvas demonstrates his mature mastery of color temperature and atmospheric perspective, techniques that would influence generations of painters from Rothko to Pollock. The work represents Monet's final artistic evolution, moving beyond Impressionism's documentary impulses toward pure chromatic poetry.
