About the Artwork
This work belongs to Monet's pivotal Pourville series, painted during his productive summer residency on the Norman coast when he was establishing his reputation as the leading voice of Impressionism. Created just two years after his first commercial success, the painting reflects his growing confidence in translating atmospheric effects directly onto canvas without preliminary studies. The composition reveals Monet's fascination with the dramatic topography where the Seine-Maritime meets the English Channel, a subject he would revisit in his later Étretat and Dieppe campaigns. Contemporary critics praised these coastal works for their bold color harmonies and their departure from the pastoral river scenes that had defined his earlier career.
