The Starry Night
To scale 30 x 25 in on the wall
Representative Hand-applied gesso embellishment
About the Artwork
Painted during van Gogh's year-long stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, The Starry Night emerged from the artist's east-facing window view combined with his imagination and memory of other landscapes. Created in June 1889, just thirteen months before his death, this canvas represents van Gogh's most ambitious attempt to paint the night sky from direct observation and inner vision combined. The work synthesizes his fascination with astronomy, his study of Japanese woodblock prints, and his desire to express the spiritual through the natural world; unlike his typical plein air practice, this composition was painted entirely in his studio. The painting joined the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1941 and has since become perhaps the most recognized image in Western art, inspiring countless interpretations in popular culture while maintaining its power to convey van Gogh's unique synthesis of observation, emotion, and cosmic wonder.
