Starry Night Over the Rhône
About the Artwork
Painted during van Gogh's prolific Arles period in September 1888, this canvas emerged from the artist's fascination with nocturnal subjects and his desire to paint the stars from direct observation. Van Gogh set up his easel by the river at night, working by candlelight attached to his hat and easel to capture the immediate sensation of the scene. The work represents a pivotal moment in Post-Impressionist painting, where van Gogh moved beyond mere representation to express the emotional and spiritual resonance of the natural world. Unlike his more famous 'The Starry Night' painted a year later in the asylum, this earlier work maintains a stronger connection to observed reality while still revealing the artist's unique vision of nature as a living, breathing force.
