The vedutismo tradition flourished in 18th-century Italy primarily in Venice through Canaletto and Bellotto, but its reach extended to every major Italian city as aristocratic and mercantile patrons commissioned documentary views of Rome, Florence and Naples for display in private palaces and as souvenirs of the Grand Tour. Works of this type were produced by a large workshop culture, and many fine examples survive without secure attribution. This canvas sits comfortably within that mid-18th-century Italian tradition: the handling of the figures, dressed in the fashions of roughly 1730 to 1770, the formulaic but accomplished perspective geometry, and the warm southern light all point to a trained Italian hand working within an established commercial genre. Views of this kind served a double function: they recorded civic pride in a city's built environment and fed the insatiable appetite of northern European collectors for Italian urban scenery, forming one of the first sustained markets for reproducible topographical imagery in Western art history.
