Hand-embellished with our signature gesso finish. We apply a textured gesso layer over the canvas by hand to simulate the original brushwork: the depth and gloss that printed reproductions can't capture. Crafted to order by American artisans.

About the Artwork

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839 to 1892) is widely regarded as the last great master of ukiyo-e, the artist who carried the tradition through the upheaval of Japan opening to the West. This design belongs to One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki hyakushi), the crowning series of his career, published between 1885 and 1892, in which each print pairs the moon with a moment drawn from history, legend, literature, or faith. Hotei is one of the Seven Lucky Gods and a favorite subject of Zen painters, who loved him as an emblem of freedom from worldly burden. This version is unusually restrained and modern, closer to a painting than a commercial print, and it shows the series at its most contemplative.
