The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Moran traveled to Yellowstone in the summer of 1871 as part of the Ferdinand V. Hayden geological survey, one of the first government expeditions to document the region systematically. It was his first visit to the American West, and the canyon's scale and its extraordinary mineral coloration clearly upended whatever expectations he had carried from the Catskills and the Adirondacks. He made extensive field sketches and watercolor studies on the spot, then composed this monumental oil, measuring roughly 7 by 12 feet, in his studio the following year. When Congress debated whether to set aside Yellowstone as the nation's first national park in 1872, Moran's painting was exhibited in the Capitol building alongside photographs by William Henry Jackson. Many historians credit that exhibition with tipping the vote in favor of preservation. The work was purchased by Congress for $10,000 and entered the collection of the United States Department of the Interior, where it remained a centerpiece of American landscape art for generations. Within American Romanticism and the broader tradition of sublime landscape painting, this canvas occupies a singular position: it is simultaneously a scientific document, a political instrument, and a fully realized work of art that extended the ambitions of Hudson River School painting into entirely new terrain, both literally and aesthetically.
