Cliffs of Green River

Moran made his first journey to the Green River region of Wyoming in 1871, traveling as part of the Ferdinand V. Hayden geological survey of Yellowstone, and the Wyoming landscape seized his imagination so thoroughly that he returned to its subjects repeatedly through the 1870s and beyond. Cliffs of Green River, dated 1874, belongs to the years immediately following that transformative expedition, when Moran was working at the peak of his powers and his grand western canvases were reshaping how Americans understood their own continent. His enormous The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (1872) had already been purchased by Congress for ten thousand dollars, making him the first American artist to achieve that distinction, and the Green River series that followed rode a wave of critical and popular enthusiasm for monumental western scenery. The painting participates in the broader tradition of American Sublime landscape painting descending from the Hudson River School, yet Moran's palette, saturated with the warm chromatic intensity he absorbed from J. M. W. Turner during a formative 1871 study trip to England, pushes the work toward something more theatrical and chromatic than Thomas Cole or Asher B. Durand typically permitted themselves. The result is a vision of the American West that is simultaneously documentary and operatic, grounded in observed geology yet suffused with a golden idealism that helped cement the mythology of the frontier landscape in the national imagination.
