The Architect's Dream
About the Artwork
Cole painted The Architect's Dream in 1840 as a commission from the prominent New York architect Ithiel Town, who envisioned the work as a personal tribute to architectural eclecticism. The relationship soured almost immediately: Town reportedly found the composition too fantastical and rejected the painting, leaving Cole in possession of a work he came to regard as among his most ambitious. At this moment in Cole's career he was deeply preoccupied with cycles of civilization, most clearly expressed in his monumental series The Course of Empire (1833 to 1836), and this painting extends that meditation into a more personal, interior register. Rather than depicting the rise and fall of a society through time, Cole compresses all of architectural history into a single Romantic dream space. The Hudson River School sensibility is present in the luminous handling of atmosphere and the almost topographic precision of the distant forms, yet the subject here is not American wilderness but the accumulated weight of human building, from Egypt to Greece to medieval Christendom. The painting entered the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, where it has been held and studied as a key document in Cole's thinking about history, memory and professional ambition.
