L'Ombrello

Emilio Spreafico (1840-1916) trained at the Brera Academy in Milan and exhibited regularly at its annual shows throughout the second half of the 19th century. He worked within the tradition of northern Italian genre painting that emerged after Unification, a tradition concerned with the textures of everyday life rather than with historical or mythological grandeur. His closest affinities were with the Lombard wing of Italian Realism, a circle of painters who looked to the French Barbizon school and to the social observation of Giuseppe Molteni and Mosè Bianchi while remaining committed to the particular light and ordinary subjects of the Po Valley. L'Ombrello belongs to a body of work Spreafico devoted to children: figures caught in unrehearsed, unguarded moments, their dignity asserted through exact observation rather than sentimentality. The choice of winter and snow is characteristic: where academic painters might have reached for a warm interior or a sunlit garden, Spreafico placed his subjects in the open cold, granting them the same serious treatment he would have given any laboring adult. The painting was shown at the Brera exhibitions during the 1870s and 1880s, a period when Italian critics were debating whether verismo in painting carried the same moral weight as in literature, and Spreafico's quiet, rigorously observed scenes were frequently cited as evidence that it could.
