Evening Market (Avondmarkt)
To scale 31 x 25 in on the wall
Representative Hand-applied gesso embellishment
About the Artwork
Painted during the height of van Schendel's career in Brussels, Avondmarkt exemplifies the artist's pioneering role in the candlelight genre that would influence generations of European painters. Working in the tradition of nocturne painting established by earlier Dutch masters, van Schendel elevated humble market scenes into poetic meditations on light and human connection. This work emerged during a period when European cities were rapidly industrializing, making these intimate glimpses of traditional commerce increasingly precious to contemporary viewers. The painting's careful attention to the dignity of working-class subjects reflects the Romantic movement's democratic ideals, while its technical sophistication in rendering artificial light effects positioned van Schendel as one of the most sought-after specialists in this demanding pictorial challenge.
