About the Artwork
N.C. Wyeth painted this work in 1927 as part of a series of illustrations commissioned to mark the 435th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage, a period when the explorer was still a figure of unambiguous national celebration in the United States. By 1927 Wyeth was at the height of his powers as the pre-eminent illustrator of the Golden Age of American Illustration, having already produced landmark series for Scribner's Classics including Treasure Island (1911) and The Last of the Mohicans (1919). His training under Howard Pyle at the Brandywine school had instilled in him a commitment to historical authenticity: Wyeth researched period rigging, sail-plan configurations and hull profiles before setting brush to canvas. The painting was reproduced widely in print media and helped shape a generation's visual idea of the Age of Discovery. It stands as a key document of the Brandywine tradition, a regional American school that believed illustration and fine art were not separate endeavors, and that the popular image carried as much moral and aesthetic weight as the gallery canvas.
