By 1941, when this work was likely painted, Wyeth was at the height of his mature powers as a fine artist, working to distinguish his personal landscape practice from the commercial illustration work for which the wider public knew him. The Georges Islands sit at the mouth of the St. George River, visible from the Port Clyde headlands, and they appear in several works from this period as Wyeth explored the structural drama of rock, water, and evergreen against an open sky.
