Franklin's Arrival in Philadelphia

Wyeth painted this work in 1926 as part of a long series of historical illustrations produced for prominent American publishers, at a moment when his reputation as the foremost narrative illustrator in the country was firmly established. He had already completed his landmark illustrations for Scribner's Classics, including Treasure Island (1911) and Kidnapped (1913), and was deeply engaged with American historical subjects that required the same operatic command of light and storytelling. The image belongs to the tradition of American Historical Realism, a mode Wyeth practiced with theatrical conviction: every figure is psychologically present, every detail of costume and setting is historically researched, and the drama is made immediate rather than archival. The painting draws on the famous passage in Franklin's own autobiography describing his arrival in Philadelphia as a hungry, bedraggled seventeen-year-old, a founding national myth of self-made ambition.
