About the Artwork
Painted on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel between 1536 and 1541, this masterwork emerged during Michelangelo's mature period when the 61-year-old artist grappled with personal mortality and the Catholic Church's response to Protestant reformation. Pope Paul III commissioned the fresco to replace Perugino's earlier decoration, giving Michelangelo unprecedented creative freedom that resulted in controversial nude figures later censored by the Council of Trent. The work represents the culmination of High Renaissance artistic achievement while anticipating Mannerist complexities; critics initially denounced its departure from traditional Last Judgment iconography, yet it became the most studied religious painting in Western art, influencing centuries of artists who made pilgrimages to witness its revolutionary vision of divine justice.
