About the Artwork
Completed when Michelangelo was only twenty-four, this masterpiece established his reputation as the greatest sculptor of the High Renaissance and remains the only work he ever signed. Commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères' funeral monument in St. Peter's Basilica, the sculpture sparked controversy for its departure from Byzantine traditions that portrayed Mary as an aged mother. Michelangelo defended his choice by arguing that Mary's purity preserved her youth, demonstrating the theological sophistication that would define his career. The work survived the 1972 hammer attack by Laszlo Toth and underwent extensive restoration, returning it to its original luminous perfection in the Sistine Chapel where it now resides behind protective glass.
