Parrish completed Daybreak in 1922 for a reproduction commission by the House of Art, New York. It became one of the best-selling art prints in American commercial history: by 1925 an estimated one in four American homes displayed a reproduction. The painting arrived at a pivotal moment in Parrish's career, after two decades of celebrated magazine covers and book illustrations for Scribner's, Century, and Collier's, but before the critical establishment began to separate his reputation as an illustrator from his standing as a fine artist.
