Daybreak

Parrish completed Daybreak in 1922 for a reproduction commission by the House of Art, New York. It became one of the best-selling art prints in American commercial history: by 1925 an estimated one in four American homes displayed a reproduction. The painting arrived at a pivotal moment in Parrish's career, after two decades of celebrated magazine covers and book illustrations for Scribner's, Century, and Collier's, but before the critical establishment began to separate his reputation as an illustrator from his standing as a fine artist. Art historians now situate Daybreak within the broader current of American Tonalism and the decorative wing of American Modernism, acknowledging both its debt to classical allegory and its thoroughly commercial ambition. The composition draws on Parrish's longstanding study of Classicism: the colonnade, the Arcadian landscape, and the idealized figures recall Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton, filtered through an American sensibility that prized light over narrative. The original oil is held in a private collection; the image entered wide circulation immediately upon publication and has never left it.
