About the Artwork
Painted in 1914 during the final productive years before Godward's tragic end, this canvas represents the artist's mature synthesis of Neoclassical idealism with Victorian sensuality. Working within the tradition established by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Godward had perfected his technique of rendering marble textures and Mediterranean light; yet Tranquillity displays a more introspective quality than his earlier, more narrative works. The painting emerged during a period when Aesthetic Movement principles faced increasing challenge from modernist innovations; Godward's unwavering commitment to classical beauty would soon make him an anachronism, but works like this demonstrate the sophisticated technical achievements his dedication produced.
