About the Artwork
Painted in 1899 during Godward's most productive period, The Signal exemplifies the artist's response to Lawrence Alma-Tadema's influence while establishing his own distinctive interpretation of classical antiquity. This work emerged as Godward was gaining recognition in London's Royal Academy exhibitions, where his Neoclassical subjects provided wealthy Victorian collectors with idealized visions of ancient Mediterranean life. The painting represents Godward's rebellion against modernist movements; he remained steadfast in his belief that beauty and technical mastery should triumph over the experimental approaches that dominated early twentieth-century art. His tragic suicide in 1922, reportedly accompanied by a note declaring that "the world is not big enough for myself and a Picasso," makes works like The Signal poignant testimonies to an artist who refused to compromise his classical vision.
