Watson and the Shark
About the Artwork
Painted during Copley's early years in London after leaving colonial Boston, this work marked his ambitious entry into European art circles and helped establish his reputation as a master of dramatic historical painting. Watson himself, who had lost his leg in the actual 1749 attack and later became a successful merchant and eventual Lord Mayor of London, commissioned the work as both personal memorial and public spectacle. The painting caused a sensation when exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1778; critics were stunned by Copley's decision to depict a contemporary catastrophe rather than classical mythology or biblical narrative. This bold choice helped pioneer the genre of modern historical painting in neoclassical art, influencing generations of artists who would similarly find drama in recent events rather than ancient tales.
