A nude boy stands at the center of a tiled chamber, his back to the viewer, a large snake draped across his shoulders and coiling down toward a seated audience of turbaned men. The men sit low against a wall of intricate blue and multicolor geometric tilework, its patterns rendered with almost architectural precision. Light falls from an unseen source above, catching the boy's skin and the snake's pale underside while the seated figures recede into shadowed ochres and muted textiles. The composition is theatrical: a shallow stage framed by the tiled wall, the performance pressed close to the picture plane so the viewer becomes part of the gathered crowd. Gérôme's brushwork disappears entirely into the illusion, every tile edge and woven rug fiber accounted for.
