A single figure fills the canvas, turned slightly aside so the light falls full across his face and shoulder. He wears an ornate turban wound with striped cloth, and a richly patterned coat in warm, earthy tones that shifts between rust, olive and gold as it catches the light. The brushwork is smooth and exacting, rendering the texture of silk, fur trim and braided cord with an almost photographic clarity. Behind him the background dissolves into a soft, indistinct brown, so nothing competes with the figure himself.
