Macbeth Landscape
About the Artwork
Corot painted this work in 1859, at the height of his international reputation, when he was returning with renewed interest to the grand tradition of the paysage historique, the composed historical landscape descended from Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin. Shakespeare's Macbeth provided the literary occasion: the moment on the heath where the witches address Macbeth and Banquo, though Corot renders the supernatural encounter through atmosphere rather than theatrical detail. The work belongs to a group of Shakespearean subjects Corot undertook in the late 1850s and 1860s, including his celebrated treatments of Dante and Virgil and scenes from Hamlet. Romanticism had opened French landscape painting to literary subjects and dramatic weather, and Corot worked within that inheritance while pushing toward something quieter and more psychological: the figures do not dominate the scene but are absorbed into it, as if the landscape itself were the protagonist. The painting was shown at the Salon and confirmed Corot's standing as the foremost landscape painter in France at mid-century, bridging the heroic classical tradition and the open-air observation that the younger Impressionists would soon radicalize.
