Forest of Anagoria

Shishkin painted this work in 1887, at the height of his powers and reputation as Russia's pre-eminent landscape painter. By the mid-1880s he had become the dominant voice of the Peredvizhniki, the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions, whose founding ambition was to bring serious, truthful Russian landscape painting to a public beyond the imperial academies of St. Petersburg. Shishkin had spent the 1870s and early 1880s developing an approach to the Russian forest that owed as much to the rigorous naturalism of the German Düsseldorf School, where he trained, as to any native Romantic tradition. By 1887 that synthesis was complete: the sentimentality had been stripped away, and what remained was a direct, unsentimental engagement with the forest as a physical fact. The Anagoria woods, located in the Estonian territory then part of the Russian Empire, gave Shishkin a subject that allowed him to test his method against old-growth trees of genuine grandeur. The painting entered the collection associated with the Anagoria estate and has been cited by later critics as one of the most structurally resolved of his forest interiors, anticipating the tonal discipline that would define his final decade. It was exhibited with the Peredvizhniki and reviewed as evidence of Shishkin's unmatched ability to render the interior logic of a forest rather than merely its picturesque surface.
