The Forest Clearing

Shishkin painted this work during the most productive and celebrated decade of his career, when he was recognized across the Russian Empire as the preeminent painter of the forest. He had spent years making exhaustive plein-air studies in the forests of the Kama River region and the island of Valaam, and by the late 1880s those studies had matured into large finished canvases of remarkable authority. The painting belongs to a series of sun-drenched forest interiors that Shishkin exhibited with the Peredvizhniki, the Society of Wandering Exhibitions, the progressive realist movement he had helped found. The Peredvizhniki rejected the academic isolation of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy in favor of art that traveled to the Russian public and spoke directly to the national landscape. Shishkin's forest scenes became icons of that project: the Russian birch and oak woods rendered with scientific fidelity yet imbued with a palpable sense of shelter and abundance. Works from this period entered major collections including the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, where Shishkin's forest paintings remain among the most visited in the permanent collection.
