Rain in an Oak Forest

Shishkin painted this work in 1891, at the height of his powers and his reputation as the preeminent painter of the Russian forest. He had spent decades in systematic study of tree species, forest structure and the particular light conditions of the Russian interior, and by the 1890s his large-format forest scenes carried an authority that no contemporary could match. Realism was the governing impulse of his career: a commitment, inherited from the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers movement), to unembellished observation of the Russian land and its weather. Where his contemporaries might seek the dramatic or the picturesque, Shishkin sought the specific: a particular species of oak, a particular quality of rain-light, a particular hour in a particular forest. The painting entered the collection of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, where it remains, and has been widely reproduced as one of the defining images of Russian landscape painting. It belongs to a tradition of forest interiors that Shishkin had been developing since the 1860s, each one pushing further into the structural complexity of the woodland scene.

The full dynamic range, from the darkest forest shadow to the reflected light on the puddles, is preserved without the clipping that degrades cheaper reproductions. The ornate composite frame, in a warm metallic finish, provides a fitting enclosure for a painting of this scale and seriousness.
