Golden Autumn in Slobodka
About the Artwork
Levitan painted this view of the village of Slobodka in 1893, a period of exceptional productivity during which he was developing the lyrical strain of Russian landscape painting that would define his legacy. Working in the tradition of the Peredvizhniki, the Wanderers who had championed unidealized views of the Russian countryside since the 1870s, Levitan pushed that realist foundation toward something more personal and atmospheric: what his contemporaries called the landschaft nastroenie, or mood landscape, in which the scene carries an unmistakable emotional register without resorting to allegory or narrative. Slobodka, a small settlement near Klin in central Russia, gave him the kind of unpretentious, working rural subject the Wanderers prized, but his handling here transcends reportage. The composition was shown within the broader context of his autumn cycle, a recurring preoccupation that occupied him from the late 1880s through to his death in 1900, and the Slobodka canvas demonstrates how he could wring intense feeling from a resolutely ordinary subject: a muddy lane, a few grey rooftops, and two trees on fire with color. Chekhov, his close friend and most perceptive critic, recognized in these autumn pictures a quality he described as crying without knowing why.
