Colonnade
About the Artwork
Hubert Robert spent eleven formative years in Rome from 1754 to 1765, absorbing the ruins of antiquity alongside Giovanni Battista Piranesi, whose engraved prisons and temples cast a long shadow over Robert's entire career. By the late 1770s and 1780s, Robert had become the preeminent painter of architectural fantasy in France, celebrated enough to earn the nickname Robert des Ruines. This period saw him working at the height of his powers: appointed Keeper of the King's Pictures in 1784, he was simultaneously producing large decorative ensembles for aristocratic interiors, royal chateaux and the nascent Louvre. Colonnade sits squarely within that moment, deploying the Neoclassical taste for antique grandeur while the staffage figures and the softened, atmospheric handling of depth connect the work to the broader Classicism of the French Enlightenment. Robert's ruins are never mournful catalogs; they are inhabited, inhabited by time itself, and by ordinary people who neither venerate nor mourn the stones around them, which gives the pictures their peculiar and enduring melancholy.
